Yummy Human Appetizer

Here's a yummy human recipe for holiday appetizers from Chef Carmen Gonzalez. There is garlic in it so I wouldn't recommend it for your pup.

Bacalao Fritters

Recipe adapted from Carmen Gonzalez, Carmen at the Danforth, Portland, ME
MAKES 6 TO 8 APPETIZER-SIZE SERVINGS (OR ABOUT 12 FRITTERS)
INGREDIENTS

½ pound bacalao (dried salt cod)
1½ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1½ cups water

1 garlic clove, minced

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Canola oil, for frying

START TO FINISH: 1 HOUR
DIRECTIONS

1. In a large pot, cover the bacalao with water. Bring the water to a boil, then continue boiling for 15 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the heat, drain and check the bacalao for saltiness. (It should taste like the ocean. If it’s too salty, boil for 10 minutes longer, then drain and taste again.) Let the bacalao cool slightly, then transfer it to a small bowl and break it into small pieces with your fingertips. Set aside.
2. In a medium bowl, use a wooden spoon to mix the flour with the baking powder. Slowly add the water and mix until a smooth batter forms. Gently mix in the reserved bacalao, the garlic and black pepper. Set aside.

3. Line a large plate with paper towels. In a deep saucepan, heat 1½ inches of canola oil until it reaches 350ยบ. Working in batches, use two spoons to scoop up about 2 tablespoons of the batter. Quickly drop the batter into the oil and cook, turning a few times, until the fritters are golden brown on all sides, about 3 minutes per batch. (Reheat the oil between batches as needed.)

4. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the fritters to the prepared plate and let cool slightly. Serve warm with desired accompaniments.

Safety Tips for Holiday Season

We've said it before and we'll say it again: keep the holiday season safe and fun for all. Here are some great reminders form the North Shore Animal League, where there are lots of wonderful dogs up for adoption especially in the wake of Sandy, if you are so inclined.

1. Fatty Foods: Too many fatty, rich, or unfamiliar foods can give your pet pancreatitis or gastroenteritis; two medical conditions that can be very painful and even life-threatening.

2. Diet and Exercise: Maintain your pet's regular meal and exercise schedule and avoid too many holiday leftovers. A disruption in his dietary routine can cause stomach upset, diarrhea and/or vomiting.

3. Bones: Make no bones about it. Certain bones can lacerate or obstruct your pets' insides. Save the bones for the broth - not your dog.

4. Onions: Onions and onion powder, widely found in stuffing and used as a general seasoning, will destroy your dog or cat's red blood cells, which can lead to anemia.

5. Grapes and Raisins: Grapes and raisins contain a toxin that can cause kidney damage to both dogs and cats.

6. Chocolate: Chocolate can actually be fatal to your dog or cat; so all those sweets must be kept well out of reach.

7. Food Wrappings: Aluminum foil, wax paper and other food wrappings can cause intestinal obstruction. Make sure to place these items securely in the garbage.

8. Fresh Water: Make sure your pet always has fresh water. When there are more people in the house, there's more chance to bump into the water bowl leaving your pet dry.

9. Quiet Time: Make sure your pet has a quiet retreat should the holiday festivities be too much for him. Watch his behavior to make sure he is not stressed.

10. Garbage: Keep an eye on the garbage and keep it securely fastened! If your dog gets into it, he may think he's hit the jackpot, but all he'll be winning is health problems from something as simple as gastric disturbance, vomiting and diarrhea to the worst-case scenario - death.

Thanksgiving Feast

Just in time for Thanksgiving, come these warnings from veterinarian, Ann Anderson of Rochester, Minnesota, about sharing the contents of your holiday feast with your pets:

The Thanksgiving meal, the ultimate yearly celebration of comfort food, is coming soon. So let’s talk turkey. Poultry bones can splinter and cause gastrointestinal distress. Even if you don’t give them to your pets, it is pretty easy for a dog to dig them out of your fragrant, bone-filled garbage.

High fat foods — gravy, pie or cookies — the filling staples of the Thanksgiving meal, can make your pet sick with diarrhea, vomiting, and pancreatitis. That much fat isn’t good for pets.

Besides fatty fare, there are many specific food items to avoid giving to pets. Onions, garlic, and chives can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and red blood cell damage, particularly in cats.

Sage is an herb used in stuffing. Consumption of a large enough quantity of sage can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and central nervous system depression. Cats are particularly sensitive to sage’s detrimental effects.

Chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, and death. Dark baking chocolate is the most dangerous.

Xylitol, a popular sugar substitute used in diabetic candy and desserts, causes life-threatening low blood sugar and liver failure in pets.

Raw bread dough can rise in your dog’s stomach just like it does in an oven. This can result in vomiting, abdominal pain, and bloat. Bloat is a condition where the stomach enlarges and twists. This is a life-threatening condition requiring immediate surgery.

Be thankful that your pets have their own food and please don't contribute too much of your own to their dishes!

Emergency Procedure for Mushroom Poisonings

If your dog should ever eat a poisonous mushroom, rush them to the vet and refer them to this story.

The gist of the matter is this: get the vet to insert a thin needle into your dog's gall bladder and drain the poison. If your dog is as lucky as Kasey from Richmond, california, on who this procedure was performed, all should be fine.

Better yet--keep the mushrooms out of your backyard by removing them at the root.

“Whether it's a cake that looks so much like your dog you're afraid it'll lick your face - or cupcakes and cake pops that are so pretty you'll want to decorate your home with them, we ensure all our creations are a visual delight and a tasty treat."

"The strangest request we've had so far is a wolf in sheep's clothing cake. We haven't made it yet, but we are definitely going to give it a go at some point!' Eddie told HuffPost Lifestyle.

All of this sugar does not come cheap. The cakes start at about 300 British pounds--about $500 plus dollars--and they take 10-12 hours to create. No word yet on whether they can be shipped long distances.

Clever Cat

A lot of people have asked us if there is a cookbook for cats in the wings. Well, no. One reason is that feeding cats is a lot more complicated than feeding dogs and the other reason is that they really don't need a cookbook as the above video demonstrates. They can get their own supper!

A great new PBS series that premieres in May. Check your local listings and don't forget the tissues. These stories will warm your heart and maybe even loosen those tear ducts, in a good way.

Finding Knuckles

Now that is some custody battle.

Actually more and more lawyers are becoming specialists in pet law but their fees are high--just like all legal fees. The intention is not to encourage you to support this battle--just to inform you about the lengths to which some pet owners are willing to go.

And who's to say we wouldn't do the same thing?

You can bring The Culinary Canine in book form through customs but not the ingredients in it. If you do, and come through Kennedy International, chances are, Izzy the beagle will sniff you out!

Top 5 Pet Poisons Lurking in Your Purse

Here are 5 things your dog should never eat, and many of them just might be found in your purse. Keep those satchels zipped if you transport any of the following:

1. Sugarless gum or mints: xylitol is a sweetener that is toxic to dogs. If your dog does ingest some, get him/her to the vet ASAP.

2. Human medications--Tylenol, Advil or any of the over the counter painkillers that we might carry with us. A dog can gnaw through those pill bottles pretty quickly and are attracted to the shake, rattle and roll aspect of what seems to be a great toy. Again a trip to the vet is crucial if you find a gnawed bottle.

3. Asthma inhalers--this one is my purse and I never knew it could be life threatening to pets. Paws off!

4. Cigarettes--goes without saying but you shouldn't have these anyway. Toxic to everyone.

5. Hand sanitizer. Again, always in my bag but the alcohol can be deadly to pets.

Open Sesame

When my grandmother was in an assisted care community toward the end of her life, they had these great doors that would open outward when you stepped on a certain spot on the floor. The idea was to make transportation easier for people pushing wheel chairs or those using walkers but the first time I stepped on the Open Sesame spot, I thought it would be a great thing to have at home so the dogs could let themselves in and out. Except I am pretty sure Amos would just stand there mesmerized.

In any event, this little Corgi has figured it out all by himself. No doggy door for him!

Camping with Dogs

I just love this commercial! They need a few marshmallows to make the campfire scene complete but the biggest dogs are the first to run for the car when a wolf howls!

Got Milk?

The exact opposite of the factory farms that Martha Stewart describes, is this farmer in Wellington, Ohio who purchased $300 water beds for his dairy cows. And guess what? The quality of the milk improved. Didn't Borden's use to say their contended cows gave the best milk?

Seems they may have been right
