Admit it. You've cooked for your dogs. Maybe not to the extent that the chefs in our book have, but a little chicken soup here, a little beef burgundy there...we get it. Well guess what? It's safe to come out from behind the apron and share your recipes with us. After all, 30 great chefs did. You tell us about your culinary canine, and we'll tell you about ours and the ones we meet along the way. Oh, and don't forget to buy the book.

The Scent of Low Blood Sugar
Dogs sniff out diabetes at Eli Lilly
Dogs are being trained to sniff out when a diabetic's blood sugar gets too low and scientists at Eli Lilly are trying to figure out what is in that canine nose that makes it able to do this. You already know how well your dog can sniff out the smallest crumb. No surprise that he can sniff changes in blood sugar levels.

Cornelia Guest
The photo above is from a wonderful profile of Cornelia Guest from Sunday's New York Times. The writer visits her in her family home, Templeton, which is where we shot the photos for The Culinary Canine.
It sounds as if Cornelia, who is as genuine as they come, has acquired a few more animals since we visited. The giant tortoise is a recent addition as is the wonderful dog in the photo, which must be the Newfoundland in the piece.
Madonna, the donkey, sounds as if she is still well-fed!

A Happy Ending
Everything worked out just fine for this Oregon hiker and his dog, Ranger, when they were hiking on a trail on Mt. Hood. Ranger slipped and fell down an embankment and could not get out.
His owner slid down the embankment to help his dog who was panicking and together they waited to be rescued. All turned out just fine and you can see the wagging tail in the video.

The Power of Healing--in Bronze
Sabina and I have been working on a new book project and while we are not at liberty to discuss it just yet, I can reveal that we have been spending some time with therapy dogs--who come in all shapes and sizes. And no, the book is not about therapy dogs.
In any event, Monty, an English Springer Spaniel was a very special therapy dog at Roswell Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY. When he passed away at 13, ironically from cancer, his admirers helped commission a statue of the beloved dog.
This is a great video about the unveiling of that statue and the power and healing that even a statue of a therapy dog can bring to anyone who comes into contact with it.

Happy Birthday Julia!
Watch Julia Child's 100th birthday on PBS. See more from WGBH Specials.
A goddess in the kitchen Julia Child may not have cooked for her pets but she changed the way all of us cook, eat and regard food.
Happy Birthday Julia. On August 15 she would have been 100 and PBS has prepared a special that looks to be as special as she was.
Bon Appetit!

Dunder, age 2
This a great time-lapse photo series of Dunder, the German Shepherd as he grows from age one to age 2. He may not change much in size and stature but he does demonstrate that dogs are still puppies at heart even at 2!
