Open Sesame

When my grandmother was in an assisted care community toward the end of her life, they had these great doors that would open outward when you stepped on a certain spot on the floor. The idea was to make transportation easier for people pushing wheel chairs or those using walkers but the first time I stepped on the Open Sesame spot, I thought it would be a great thing to have at home so the dogs could let themselves in and out. Except I am pretty sure Amos would just stand there mesmerized.

In any event, this little Corgi has figured it out all by himself. No doggy door for him!

Camping with Dogs

I just love this commercial! They need a few marshmallows to make the campfire scene complete but the biggest dogs are the first to run for the car when a wolf howls!

Got Milk?

The exact opposite of the factory farms that Martha Stewart describes, is this farmer in Wellington, Ohio who purchased $300 water beds for his dairy cows. And guess what? The quality of the milk improved. Didn't Borden's use to say their contended cows gave the best milk?

Seems they may have been right

A Twitter Sensation

For you Twitter followers out there (we tweet at #culcanine by the way), the feed #dogsdoingthings just might be worth your time. The brainchild of Clayton Lamar and Patrick Carr, it has almost 9,000 followers (anybody want to buy a great cookbook?) who imagine dogs doing very undoglike things, all while presiding over a dying planet.

"We have only a few rules, : says Lamar. "Dogs can't do dog things, and dogs can't retweet."

Better question: when have dogs ever (especially in the last 10 years) just done dog things?

Bo on the Run

You may not understand the promo for Univision but you certainly will know a happy dog when you see one. Bo is out for an afternoon romp, oblivious to the cameras. Makes for an adorable clip!

There's an App for That

All that eating and little exercise can lead to a pudgy pup. Now there's an App for that! Seriously. iWalkDogs, available on i-tunes, keeps track of multiple dogs (if you have more than one or are a dog walker), how far they walk or run and even how much exercise they get in the back yard.

If you don't have a pup, it will even keep tack of your mileage!

Give it a try and let us know what you think.

Chewing the Fat

An oldie but goodie, passed on from a friend....

A guy is driving around the back woods of Montana and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: 'Talking Dog For Sale 'He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard.
The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there.

'You talk?' he asks.

'Yep,' the Lab replies.

After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says 'So, what's your story?'

The Lab looks up and says, 'Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA.

In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.'

'I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running...

But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals.'
'I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired.'

The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

'Ten dollars,' the guy says.

'Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?'

'Because he's a Bullshitter, he's never been out of the yard'

So Ugly, You Gotta Love 'Em

Surely you have all watched the film Best in Show that pokes fun at the large-than-life pooches, owners and handlers on the dog show circuit. But now comes a documentary that celebrates the World's Ugliest Dog, called appropriately Worst in Show.

The contest, held every summering Petaluma, California (probably no coincidence on the location), celebrates the dog with the ugliest natural features and apparently things get to be a little dog-eat-dog in the show arena.

The film was just released on DVD and is available for order at www.worstinshow.com.

Now how about a contest for best in chow?
